Season One

Kultur Cine Club is about to launch! Kultur’s opening night will take place on Wednesday 15th Nov 2006 at The Reform bar (12-14 Merrion Street, Leeds, LS1 6PQ, UK).

Season One will bring a little bit of Brazil in an attempt to help you warm up on these cold winter nights. We’ll focus on people living on the margins of the Brazilian society and show their determination and faith, despite all the difficulties encountered in their quest for a better life.

We’ll bring the freshest and most exciting Brazilian talent to the screen, taking you on a journey through Rio and the startlingly grim reality of its favelas and through the grass root musical traditions of the country, showing you the diversity of street musicians, native instruments and traditions, from the North East to the Minas Gerais region, and a different reality to the one found in Rio. This season, we'll show you:

award-winner short films from directors such as Fernando Meirelles (City of God, Constant Gardiner), Katia Lund (City of God, News From a Personal War) and Roberto Berliner (Born to Be Blind, The Tuning of the Inner Side);

award-winner documentaries such as Fala Tu (Lives of Rhyme) and episodes from the BBC4 series City of Men from the same directors and some of the casting of City of God;

introductory talks & Q&A sessions facilitated by film writers and critics such as Andrew Tudor (Professor and Head of Theatre, Film and Television Department, University of York and author of Monsters and Mad Scientists: A Cultural History of the Horror Movie), Stephanie Dennison (Director of the Centre of Brazilian Film Studies, University of Leeds and co-author of Popular Cinema in Brazil) and native Brazilian, Tatiana Heise (PhD student at the University of Leeds - thesis: Brazilian Culture and National Identity, focusing on contemporary Brazilian cinema).

a fantastic Brazilian soundtrack and food.

Doors will open at 6pm and the first talks and screenings will start at 7 pm.
